Kerala’s iconic houseboats, originally known as Kettuvallams (“boats tied with ropes” in Malayalam), evolved from traditional rice and spice transport vessels into luxurious floating retreats. Ranging from 60 to 70 feet in length and about 15 feet in width, these houseboats are constructed using wooden planks—often Anjili wood—tied together with coconut fiber ropes.
The roofs are crafted from bamboo and palm leaves, while the exterior is protected by cashew nut oil, blending traditional techniques with a touch of modern luxury.
